Learn how to do a diaper change
for the first time in a snap!

When trying to figure out how to do a diaper change for the first time on either a boy or a girl, you must first be careful with the umbilical cord until it falls of which can take 7-10 days.

When it comes to actually diapering the baby, position the back part of the diaper(the one with the velcro or sticky tabs) under the baby's buttocks.

Then fold the front part of the diaper in and under about 1 inch so that it can be positioned under the umbilical cord but so you can still fasten the hook and loop tabs.

You cannot cover the umbilical cord or the belly button area until the cord stump has fallen off. Covering this area can be irritating or painful to your baby and will not give it the chance to air dry and fall off as quickly as possible.

When changing your baby girl, you need to make sure that you clean her extremely well. You need to spread the labia (lips) and clean betwen all of the folds and creases. You must wipe from front to back to avoid getting fecal matter(poop) into the vagina which can cause infections or endometriosis.

When changing your baby boy, you need to make sure that you gently pull down the foreskin on the penis to get all of the gunk and diaper fuzzies that can collect around the head of the penis. You also need to make sure that you clean this properly so that the foreskin doesn't adhere to the head of the penis which is common.

The pediatrician would then need to pull on it to separate it which can be uncomfortable and painful depending on how much skin and how long it was attached. If this is not properly taken care of, eventually he will get an erection, whether in his sleep or while awake and can cause pain by tearing free.
