What are the symptoms of colic in infants?

It has been known that colic in infants seems to follow the "rule of 3". Crying lasts 3 hours or more. It usually occurs 3 or more days in week and lasts 3 weeks out of a month. It usually subsides by the end of 3 months.

This can be very frustrating for new parents. This is not hereditary and can happen to one or all of your children. The cause is not known or proven but some possible theories are:

* Allergies to soy-based formula or cow's milk

* Allergies to foods consumed by a breastfeeding mom

* Anxiety of a breastfeeding mom or other tension throughout the household

* Colon spasms or hyperactive gastrointestinal tract

Many foods that you consume as a breastfeeding mom can irritate your baby's digestive system through your milk that they have consumed. Some included are dairy products, caffeine, spicy foods, acid in citrus fruits, nuts, corn and wheat.

Either keep a food journal or try to remember the types of food that you ate that day. Cut them out for several days to a week and see if there is any improvement.

Speak with your pediatrician. Depending on their experience with this condition, they usually suggest making dietary changes first if you are a breastfeeding mom or they may change formulas if you are bottle feeding.

There are some herbal remedies available that you can use. Some include chamomile, fennel, dill and peppermint. You can look for non-alcohol based drops and follow the directions.
