Recovering from the birth of a baby is a little different if you had a cesarean section procedure
A cesarean section procedure is becoming a more common birth method in hospitals across America.
One third of babies are born by cesarean delivery.
Recovery from a cesarean section procedure is slightly different than a vaginal delivery. It can take 4
or more weeks to completely heal and many women report tenderness along the c-section
incision line for several more weeks following.
Even though you didn't have a vaginal delivery, you can still expect to bleed for several
weeks afterwards. You will also feel uterine contractions as your uterus tries to shrink
back down to its' pre-pregnancy size.
You definately want to take this time to rest and recover but you still need to move
around daily to promote healing. So.....wear loose fitting clothing, drink plenty of
water and remember to move around "slowly".
Walking can help speed up recovery and minimize gas build up that can occur with a
c-section birth. In addition, try to avoid all carbonated beverages until you are
completely healed. Walking may be uncomfortable or painful at first but take it slow
and the pain will lessen within a few days.
You should plan on having help for the first week or two especially if you have other
children. You will probably need help feeding them, dressing them, maybe even getting
them off to school.
Just make sure to give your other children hugs, kisses and the attention that they
crave by snuggling with them in bed or on the couch. Watch their favorite movie with them
or read their favorite book. They'll love every minute of it.
It's also advised to have your husband, friend or family member help out with other
daily chores such as cooking, cleaning and laundry. Remember, you are NOT supposed to
lift anything that is heavier than your new baby for 6-8 weeks so don't push it.
