Do you think that your
baby has Thrush?

Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth which is caused by the Candida Fungus or more commonly known as yeast.

The Candida Fungus can cause:

* Thrush in the mouth

* Diaper rash in infants

*Vaginal yeast infection in women

The main reason that babies get this type of infection is because the Candida virus is everywhere and no matter how much you clean or sterilize bottles, pacifiers, toys etc. your baby will still be exposed to the virus because they put everything in their mouths.

The yeast causes creamy white lesions on the tongue and inner cheeks, sometimes to the roof of the mouth as well. It can be passed from the newborn to its' breastfeeding mom too. If this happens, then baby and mother both need to be treated or they will just pass it back and forth to one another.

Nystatin is the most common treatment that your doctor will prescribe for your baby. It's drops that are given several times a day for 7-10 days. Adults are usually given Fluconazole (Diflucan) which is usually given in pill form.

If the Candida Fungus is causing a diaper rash, you need to rinse your baby's bottom during each diaper change with a warm water/vinegar mixture. (1 Tbs white vinegar/ 1 cup warm water) Then pat dry and use and antifungal ointment such as Lotrimin or Nystatin Cream that is prescribed by the baby's doctor. DO NOT use baby wipes until the rash is completely gone.

NOTE: Air and sunlight are the best treatment for the Candida Fungus. This means to expose your baby's bottom or infected nipples to air and sunlight when possible.
