Your diaper bag may be fashionable but is it functional?

What's in your diaper bag? Do you have everything you need? Do you need everything you have in there? It can quickly and easily become a catch all for everything from receipts, wrappers and other unwanted garbage. Below is a list of some "most important" and "nice to have extras" that you should keep in your bag.

Most Important:

* 4-6 diapers, depending on how long you will be out of the house

* Changing pad or receiving blanket to lay the baby on

* Travel size container of wipes (you don't need the LARGE,Heavy regular size)

* Diaper rash cream (you can usually find the smaller, travel size)

* Change of clothes for the unexpected soil

* Plastic zip top bag for a dirty diaper or wet clothes

* Binky/Pacifier if your child takes one

* A small toy to keep your little one busy in case a screaming fit comes on

Nice to Have:

* Bottle of Infant Tylenol and Mylicon (for teething, unexpected fever and gas)

* Breast pads if you are nursing

* Sanitary pads if you are menstruating

* Travel size bottle of antibacterial gel

* Snacks like Cheerios or Granola Bars

* You could always throw your wallet and keys in the bag to avoid carrying your purse too

There are so many really pretty bags nowadays but what I didn't learn until after I had my third child was that the magical, almighty perfect diaper bag is nothing more than a regular back pack!

They do sell very nice "back pack" bags with insulated pockets for bottles but if you don't plan on carrying many hot or cold bottles, then any good 'ol standard back pack will do. They are so awesome and the best part is that it leaves you hands free to carry more important things like.....Your Baby! I wish I would have known this for my first child.

Of course the necessities are most important to carry but the extras are great to have too. Just try not to make it too bulky and heavy.
